Monti, Trastevere, Prati, Testaccio, the centre: what to choose for quiet, for nightlife, for the Vatican or for the centre.
Where you sleep in Rome decides half the impression of the trip. It is the difference between 'out of the door, and you are already in the centre' and 'an hour on the road every day'. There is no perfect quarter — only the one that suits you. Here are the main ones, honestly, with the downsides.
1. Monti — the favourite for a first visit
Between the Colosseum and the centre, yet quiet and untouristed in the evenings. Cobbled lanes, small bars and trattorie for locals, all on foot. For whom: those who want both the centre and the atmosphere without the crowd. The downside: the good flats go quickly.
2. Trastevere — for atmosphere and evenings
The most postcard-like quarter: ivy, lanes, the city's liveliest evening life. For whom: those who come for the mood and do not turn in early. The downside: noisy into the night at weekends, and you must cross the river to the main museums.
3. The centre (Pantheon, Navona) — everything at the door
You live among the sights and step out in the morning to an empty Pantheon before the crowd. For whom: a short trip where every minute counts. The downside: the highest prices and almost no ordinary life around.
4. Prati — quiet, and by the Vatican
An elegant residential district a step from the Vatican, with good shops and calm evenings. For whom: those for whom the Vatican is the priority, and who value quiet. The downside: it is further to the ancient centre.
5. Testaccio — for those who come for the food
A Roman district as it truly is: the city's strongest cooking and no tourist gloss. For whom: the food-minded and those who want to feel a living Rome. The downside: fewer postcard views from the window.
What to avoid
The area around Termini station is convenient for transport, but by evening it is charmless and cheerless. Saving on the hotel here often turns into a spoiled impression; better to pay a little more and stay in one of the quarters above.
Coming to sightsee — choose Monti or the centre. Coming to feel the city — Trastevere or Testaccio. Coming for the Vatican — Prati.
